LAST-CORNER PASS FOR THE TITLE: Fernandez goes from P4 to P1 to claim WorldSSP300 at the final turn
It all came down to the final straight as rookie Fernandez wins the World title ahead of Thompson, who takes silver, and Salvador, who takes bronze in the World Championship
The final FIM Supersport 300 World Championship season was sent out with a bang as the title-deciding Race 2 came down to the final sector to proclaim Benat Fernandez (Team #109 Retro Traffic Kove) the race winner and 2025 World Champion. after a litany of penalties, Daniel Mogeda (Pons Motosport Italika Racing) takes home his fourth podium of the season in second, and Loris Veneman (MTM Kawasaki) closes his 2025 with a fourth WorldSSP300 podium.
BENAT GOES FOR BROKE: A final corner overtake sees the rookie crowned as the final WorldSSP300 Champion.
Two-time Champion Jeffrey Buis (Freudenberg KTM-Paligo Racing) took the holeshot from P2 to lead the bunched-up pack behind him. Fernandez bared his teeth on the final Turn 13 of the first lap to nudge Carter Thompson (MTM Kawasaki) aside to take the lead before his lead was swallowed up by the swarm of contenders behind him. Buis frequently re-emerged at the head of the pack; however, Fernandez, Antonio Torres (Team ProDina XCI) Pepe Osuna (ZAPPAS-DEZA-BOX 77 Racing Team) and Loris Veneman (MTM Kawasaki) all saw daylight at the start of the pack throughout the race. Buis fell to P6 at the start of Lap 5 after he was handed a Track Limits Penalty by FIM WorldSBK Stewards, which obliged him to drop two positions. At the end of Lap 8, Fernandez made an incisive double overtake past Torres and Salvador to take P1; however, the ProDina XCI teammates traded blows with Fernandez, the resurgent Buis. The final lap of the race saw the title contenders take off the gloves and fly three-wide into the final corner. Fernandez held the inside line while ahead of Torres and Buis and tailed immediately by David Salvador, who nearly used the slipstream to take the title on the run to the line, but the #7 crossed the 0.019s faster. Salvador however will be marked as finishing in P16 after FIM WorldSBK Stewards gave him a three-second penalty for Irresponsible Riding. After penalties were applied, Dani Mogeda (Pons Motosport Italika Racing) was promoted to P2, continuing his strong run of form to end the season with three back-to-back podiums. In P3, Antonio Torres (Team ProDina XCI) closed his season well with a podium in Race 1.
THOMPSON TAKES SILVER: The Aussie took home P6 in Race 2, but will enjoy second in the title standings
Jeffrey Buis finished in P4, a strong result for the rider who will go down in history as the rider with the most WorldSSP300 titles. Loris Veneman (MTM Kawasaki) led the MTM Kawasaki teammates on the timesheets from P5, closing the final round of the Championship which he returned to mid-season with a strong finish well within the points. Carter Thompson was outside of the podium fight for most of the contest; however, he made a late dash up the order in the final laps to finish in P6 and clinch second in the Riders’ Championship.
COMPETITIVE UNTIL THE VERY END: Top 9 all within a second of P1
Improving from his P11 grid start, Humberto Maier (Yamaha AD78 FIMLA by MS Racing) crossed the line in the category’s final race in P7. Jakob Rosenthaler (Freudenberg KTM-Paligo Racing) was shuffled down to P8 after being applied a Track Limits penalty on the final Turn 13 of the final Lap. Even with the penalisation, the Austrian can be proud of his ride after starting from P16. Matteo Vannucci (PATA AG Motorsport Italia WorldSSP300) was similarly penalised in the same last corner action, sending him down to P9. The Italian can hang his hat on his P4 finish in the Championship, powered by a thunderous second half of the season. Roberto Fernandez (Kawasaki Junior Team by MTM) wasn’t the fastest Fernandez on the day, but the #13 can be proud of his top ten to close out the season in front of his home fans.
PENALISATIONS: Several riders demoted after last-corner chaos
Antonio Torres finished the better of the two ProDina XCI riders in P3, even after he and his teammate and Championship contender, David Salvador, were penalised. Torres faced a one-position penalty to miss the podium for exceeding track limits on the final corner, and Salvador was sent down to P16 despite crossing the line second fastest. Along with Salvador, Rosenthaler and Vannucci, Gianmaria Ibidi (Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSSP300 Team), Thompson and Buis were dealt one position penalties by FIM WorldSBK Stewards for exceeding track limits.
